Android Authority Writer Leans Toward 'Dumb' Projector Over $500-$1,000 Google TV Models
As his living room TV nears the end of its life, an Android Authority writer weighing $500 to $1,000 projectors says built-in Google TV is not enough to win him over, and he is leaning toward a 'dumb' model instead.
In an article headlined "6 reasons I still haven't bought a Google TV projector (and why I may never get one)," published on September 13, the writer said his interest in projectors dates to the moment the cheap projector market took off a few years ago, when the segment was suddenly flooded with units priced from $50 to well over $500.
He bought one of those units, a cheap but decent projector costing around $100 that supported HDMI and came with a Roku in the box. At that price, he wrote, it was certainly not capable of replacing a television, but it was a good way to watch movies outdoors and gave him a taste of what projector life might be.
He reasoned that if inexpensive units were this capable, a real higher-priced projector could take him much further. That question became urgent again recently, when his living room television started showing signs that its days were numbered and he began researching the best projectors once more.
The writer said he strongly considered a Google TV projector, noting that many recent models have drawn praise from critics and users alike. The units also have Google TV built in, which he said means less setup and no extra equipment needed.
The more he looked into the category, however, the more convinced he became that he might be better off spending the same $500 to $1,000 on a "dumb" projector instead. The article's headline states that he still has not bought a Google TV projector, and raises the possibility that he never will.
