Android Auto vs Android Automotive: What's the Difference?

Engadget explains the key difference: Android Auto depends on your phone, while Android Automotive runs on the car's own hardware.

Android Auto, Google's counterpart to Apple CarPlay, connects via USB or wirelessly depending on the phone and car. It is not a substitute for the car's built-in software but displays compatible apps such as Google Maps, Spotify, and messaging services on the dashboard screen. The phone remains the brain, and the car screen provides a larger, less distracting display.

Because Android Auto is phone-dependent, drivers can move between vehicles and carry their apps, accounts, and preferences with them. The car's underlying operating system may be Android, another OS, or proprietary. In some cases, Android Auto apps can also access vehicle data such as battery level or estimated range if the automaker supports it.

Android Automotive OS, by contrast, is a software platform installed in the vehicle itself. It lets automakers integrate infotainment, instrument displays, climate controls, and EV information, rather than merely reflecting a phone's interface. AAOS is open source, while Google built-in is a separately licensed set of Google Automotive Services that can provide native Google Maps, Google Play, and Google Assistant without a phone.

The distinction matters when reading spec sheets. Rivian builds its own software on AAOS and does not offer Android Auto or CarPlay projection. Polestar shows flexibility: its AAOS-based cars can include Google built-in and remain compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Polestar 2, released in 2020, was the first production car with Android Automotive OS.
