For power banks, ZDNet spoke with Vummy Kihaule, a travel expert at Tanzania Safaris with over 10 years in tourism, who said a reliable power bank is essential for long travel days. Kihaule recommended the Anker 737, which has a 24,000 mAh capacity, enough for nearly five smartphone recharges, and can charge several devices simultaneously.

Wired, after years of testing solar generators, recommends Jackery for reliable performance and Bluetti for innovation. The Jackery HomePower 3000 offers a 3,600-watt output (7,200-watt surge) and a 3,072-watt-hour capacity. It can be charged from two solar inputs totaling up to 1,000 watts, and Wired said it works well for home backup and RVs, though it weighs about 60 pounds. The smaller Jackery Explorer 1500 Ultra has a 1,536-watt-hour capacity, an IP65 rating, and accepts up to 800 watts of solar charging. Bluetti's Elite 300 packs 3,014 watt-hours in a compact body, delivers 2,400 watts (4,800-watt surge), and can be fully charged from a 1,200-watt solar input in a little over four hours in perfect conditions, according to Wired.

In Wired's separate portable solar panel review, Jackery's SolarSaga 100 and SolarSaga 200 were the most effective panels tested. In full sun, the SolarSaga 200 consistently produced around 140 watts, occasionally reaching 170 watts. The panels use a proprietary DC8020 connector, making them best paired with Jackery generators. Bluetti's 350-watt and 500-watt panels deliver higher output, and the 350-watt version is easier to set up than the finicky 500-watt model, which folds into 12 sections. A flexible panel from BougeRV can be mounted on an RV or cabin roof and bend up to 270 degrees, weighing under 9 pounds.

According to The Verge, the Nano adapter's USB ports suit phones, tablets, earbuds, and power banks, but not most laptops; laptops can still be charged through the AC outlet. The adapter is designed to take minimal space, at 1 inch thick and 3.8 ounces.
