Ant Afu Launches AI Diet Score, Adds 100 Million Egg Reward to Weight-Loss Campaign

Ant Afu launched AI Diet Score for meal photos and added a 100-million-egg reward to its weight-loss campaign.

The score was developed by Ant Afu with an expert group from the Chinese Nutrition Society and refers to the society's "Balanced Diet Index," the report said. After a user photographs a meal before eating, the AI identifies the dishes, analyzes the proportions of carbohydrates, protein, fat and dietary fiber, assesses whether oil, salt and sugar intake exceeds limits, and checks for high-purine or high-glycemic foods.

A Leiphone reporter tested the feature with a work meal containing two meat dishes and one vegetable dish. The system gave it 81 points. The score recognized sufficient protein intake and a varied meal, but warned that sodium intake was clearly high and described the meal as "high in oil and also high in sugar." It suggested replacing the drink with unsweetened tea and trying a lighter taste "tomorrow."

Ant Afu's product manager for AI Diet Score said, "We hope to give every user an accessible personal nutritionist." The manager said the feature gives different scores and advice based on a user's BMI, exercise intensity and individual needs. For users trying to lose weight, Afu can record and manage calorie intake across meals, combine that with weight data to give diet and exercise advice, and help avoid side effects from extreme dieting. For people with chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar or high blood lipids, photographing meals can help them avoid high-oil, high-sugar and high-salt foods and support stable and improved blood sugar, blood pressure and blood lipids. For households with pregnant women, babies or older adults, Afu provides stage-specific nutrition references, including what to eat more of and what to avoid, the report said. Users can also photograph takeout, snacks or fruit before eating to know calories and nutrition, or ask Afu about health methods they are unsure about to avoid pitfalls.

The egg reward is intended to encourage users to record meals truthfully and build long-term habits, according to the report. Users who photograph and record three meals for three consecutive days and generate diet scores can unlock a surprise drop and take part in the 1-cent egg offer. The product manager said the healthier the meals and the more serious the records, the higher the chance of winning.

Public data cited in the report show that since Ant Afu launched the "Scientific Weight Loss 100 Million Jin" campaign in June, it has offered 1-cent body fat scales, upgraded the AI meal photography feature, and connected with Xiaomi and Huawei body fat scales. As of early September, more than 2.75 million people had weighed in and recorded a total weight loss of more than 5 million jin. Among users who also checked in with AI diet photos, average weight loss was twice as high. More than 80,000 users had moved overweight or obese health indicators into the normal range through scientific diet, regular routines and moderate exercise.

The Chinese Nutrition Society's expert group for diet score development said balanced diet is the foundation of weight and health management, but knowledge about scientific eating has long been separated from ordinary people's dining tables. "AI has exactly filled this gap: with a photo, ordinary people can manage every meal and be the first person responsible for their own health," the group said.

Editor's Summary

The company says the feature personalizes advice for weight loss, chronic disease, pregnant women, babies and older adults, while its weight-loss campaign has reported more than 5 million jin in cumulative weight loss.
