Anthropic brings background computer use to Claude Code on Mac

Anthropic has rolled out background computer use for Claude Code on macOS, available to Pro and Max subscribers, following OpenAI's similar feature.

Background computer use allows Claude to perform tasks on the Mac without requiring the user to surrender control of the cursor. This contrasts with earlier desktop computer use, where the AI agent typically took over the mouse pointer interactively. The new mode is designed to let users continue working on other things while Claude handles tasks in the background.

Anthropic's update follows similar functionality introduced by OpenAI earlier this year, when its ChatGPT assistant—formerly known as Codex—brought background computer use to the Mac. With this move, Anthropic is catching up to a workflow that has been positioned as a multitasking advantage for Apple users.

Claude's computer use capability is available across Claude's Code and Cowork products, which are part of Anthropic's broader push to make AI agents more useful for real-world computing tasks. 9to5Mac notes that running AI-driven computer use in the background removes a key limitation of earlier agent-based automation, which required users to hand over the mouse for extended periods.

The announcement from Anthropic did not specify a timeline for expanding the feature to other platforms. The current release is limited to macOS, and the company has not disclosed whether Windows support is planned.
