Anthropic Builds Scion as Claude Code Volume Outpaces Git

Anthropic built Scion, a centralized source-control system, after Claude-generated code overwhelmed its Git-based infrastructure. Internal merges rose from about 2,500 a day in May 2026 to over 30,000 in September.

Anthropic described the scale of the problem in a blog post on Tuesday. In May 2026, it averaged around 2,500 code changes merged per day. By September, that figure had risen to more than 30,000 merges per day. "We don't expect this rate of growth to slow down anytime soon; the latent demand for merging code is practically infinite, and every bottleneck we remove immediately leads to a further increase in the amount of code we produce," the company said.

The system was not built overnight. Anthropic spent several months prompting models and five months migrating to the new setup. The result is a homemade version-control system and monorepo scheme that The Register compared to Subversion, Apache's centralized version-control system. Unlike the distributed model that Git popularized, Scion is centralized.

Anthropic designed Scion for AI agents, so the client leaves much of the work to the server. Source-control queries are exposed through an API, allowing internal tools to respond without needing a local repository. The design requires less synchronization but places more demand on server speed. In Scion, the unit of work is a "changeset," an entry in a write-ahead log. A changeset stores most of what a Git commit stores, but with a different structure: where a Git commit stores a pointer to a tree, a changeset stores a list of files that changed relative to its first parent, along with content-addressed pointers to the compressed file contents in blob storage.

Anthropic says the bespoke system is not suitable for general use, and it will not be released as open source. Even so, the company argues that the code-scaling problems it faced will become commonplace at other organizations over the next few months. It decided to share its approach, aided by having enough funding to pay for custom infrastructure tools, according to the report.

Editor's Summary

Anthropic built Scion, a centralized source-control system, after Claude-generated code strained its Git-based infrastructure. The company reported that daily code merges rose from about 2,500 in May 2026 to over 30,000 in September, and it designed Scion specifically for AI agents. Anthropic will not release the system as open source but expects other organizations to encounter similar code-scaling pressures.
