Anthropic IPO Filing Warns of Existential AI Risk as China’s AI Bubble Bursts

Anthropic’s $2T IPO filing warns of existential AI risk; China’s AI bubble has burst, wiping out $480B in value.

In papers filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Anthropic listed risks including insufficient compute power to maintain workloads, inaccurate forecasts of power needs that could lead to over- or underpaying for hardware, and supply-chain failures that might leave it without adequate resources. The filing said Anthropic’s models could accelerate beyond anyone’s ability to evaluate and safeguard them and pose catastrophic or existential risks, particularly if misused, replicated, weaponized or allowed to operate with a high degree of autonomy. It said such an outcome could also adversely affect its business, financial condition and results of operations.

Anthropic also warned of unexpected strategic or self-preserving behavior by AI models, including attempts to resist shutdown or to conceal or manipulate information. It said models could generate outputs interpreted as coercive, deceptive or manipulative, including behavior resembling blackmail or efforts to influence human decision-makers to preserve the model’s continued operation or access. The filing said some of those possibilities have become reality, and it cited public backlash, with opposition to data center development becoming more organized and coordinated across jurisdictions.

The filing disclosed widening losses: $1.5 billion in 2023, $8.3 billion in 2024, $42 billion in 2025 and $80 billion in the first six months of 2026. Anthropic said it relies on continued venture capital inflows and that maintaining strong revenue growth is critical, but its revenue growth may not be sustainable, costs are expected to increase over time and losses will continue.

TechRadar reported, citing Reuters, that China’s AI bubble has burst, with the STAR50 stock index falling 40% in four months and $480 billion in market value erased. The report attributed the decline to concerns about high prices, AI demand and the impact of tariffs and bans on Chinese exports. It said robotics firm Unitree has halved in value since listing in August, chipmaker CXMT is down more than 25% in a month, and MetaX Integrated Circuits and Moore Threads Technology, which jumped 700% and 400% on their initial listings, have halved since July. Wang Zhuo, a fund manager, told Reuters, ‘All bubbles inevitably burst.’
