Anthropic launches Claude for Government with pre-allocated pricing
Anthropic launched Claude for Government, moving to pre-allocated pricing and adding Microsoft 365 early access.
The government version is designed to give government employees the same kinds of tools available to commercial Claude customers, according to TechRadar. Once generally available, Anthropic indicated that new features will arrive on the government platform at the same time as they do on commercial versions of Claude, so that government workers are not left behind.
Anthropic highlighted security and administrative controls as central to the launch. Administrators can set model restrictions, monitor usage, allocate spending, control external connections and manage other settings, the company said.
The company also changed its pricing structure. Rather than billing per seat, Claude for Government now runs on fixed increments based on pre-allocated spend. Under the model, agencies must commit to a specific amount, and Claude usage cannot exceed that amount.
"Administrators define user tiers with spend and model limits per group, track usage by user and by model, and get burndown alerts before a balance runs low," the company explained, according to TechRadar. Anthropic framed the change as a way to make spending more predictable as public sector scrutiny and AI costs rise.
Separately, Claude for Microsoft 365 is being made available in early access. The integration puts Claude tools directly within Microsoft's Word, Excel and PowerPoint applications, as well as Outlook in beta. By adding features at the standard public cadence and including the Microsoft 365 integration, Anthropic is acknowledging that governments do not want to compromise on features or security, TechRadar reported.
