Anthropic removes Claude's Chat/Cowork toggle and lets the model choose

Claude will now choose between Chat and Cowork automatically, Anthropic says, and can output to Docs, Slides or Design.

Android Authority reported that Anthropic described the change as merging Chat and Cowork features, with Claude making the choice on its own. Previously, users had to decide between the two modes. Chat executes tasks in a simpler chatbot interface, while Cowork offloads them to an autonomous agent that can work in the background.

For simpler tasks, that choice was relatively easy, according to the report. But for more complex work requiring extensive research or analysis, deciding between Chat and Cowork could feel overwhelming. Anthropic said it was removing the toggle entirely to alleviate that pressure.

The change is intended to reduce friction in Claude's chat interface. The report also noted that selecting among different AI tools and their respective models can already lead to choice fatigue, and the Chat/Cowork decision added another layer for Claude users. In a blog post, Anthropic said the two features are being merged and that Claude will choose between them automatically.
