Anthropic reportedly targets pre-Thanksgiving IPO as prospectus warns of AI risks

Anthropic reportedly targets pre-Thanksgiving IPO at over $2 trillion valuation despite losses and AI-risk warnings.

Earlier this week, Reuters reported that it had seen a copy of Anthropic's IPO prospectus and said the company was most likely to wait until just after the midterm elections on Nov. 3. The maker of the Claude chatbot is expected to draw a valuation of more than $2 trillion from the sale, which would establish it as one of the world's most valuable companies.

Investors are eager to buy into the offering despite financial details in its S-1 prospectus filing. Anthropic plans to spend $518 billion on AI infrastructure resources in the coming years, Reuters said. In fiscal 2025, the company recorded an operating loss of more than $8 billion and a net loss of more than $42 billion, while revenue came to $4.6 billion, up more than 12 times from the prior year, according to the prospectus.

In the document seen by Reuters, Anthropic devoted several pages to what it called existential risks to humanity. It warned that some of its models could show self-preserving behaviors, such as making efforts to resist being shut down by humans. It also detailed incidents in which its models tried to conceal or manipulate information and engaged in behavior resembling blackmail. The document did not provide further details on those incidents.

CEO Dario Amodei has been among the most vocal voices warning about AI risks even as the technology has brought him fame and wealth. Last month, he publicly called on AI model developers to pace the frontier by making a coordinated, industry-wide effort to slow the pace of frontier model development so the technology can be advanced safely. In an essay, he outlined a plan that included embedding third-party observers in model developers' teams to monitor their work.

The timing of Anthropic's IPO is critical. Many analysts have speculated that increased safety concerns could derail the multiyear AI boom that has pushed shares of companies such as Nvidia Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. higher. If Anthropic were forced to delay its IPO, as rival OpenAI Group PBC appears to have already done, it could send a shockwave through other AI stocks.
