Anthropic Study Finds Fewer Junior Technical Hires as AI Reshapes Roles

Anthropic released a study saying junior technical staff fell to 14% by mid-2026 from 21% in early 2025, while AI-driven productivity gains pushed engineers into more managerial work and added meetings. The company said some roles remain human and described itself as an early warning system for AI's workforce effects.

Anthropic concluded that AI is handling more entry-level roles, reducing the need to hire as many junior workers. The company also said it "has hired less per dollar of revenue than an earlier generation of large tech companies," citing productivity gains from AI. TechRadar reported that Anthropic is not reporting a shrinking technical workforce; the company said the workforce continues to grow, but technical employees are taking on higher-level, managerial roles.

The study measured sharp increases in output per worker from the end of 2025 to mid-2026. Code commits per engineer rose 5.1 times, data queries per data scientist rose 3.1 times, contracts per legal worker rose 3.1 times, and deals per salesperson rose 1.7 times, according to the report.

Anthropic said many employees are shifting into decision-making work, and the median time spent in meetings increased 20% across the workforce. Engineers described becoming leaders and managers of agents, while non-technical employees described doing more of the strategic parts of their jobs, according to the study.

The company also said some roles must remain human, including sales calls and interviews. Claude spends about 80% of interactive session time waiting for human input, the research found, a figure Anthropic presented as a sign that human workers remain a bottleneck in AI-assisted work.

Looking ahead, Anthropic projected that hiring priorities could shift toward skills including "autonomy and judgment." The company offered one possibility in which single-person start-ups, each with a human founder steering swarms of agents, generate billions in revenue. Anthropic said its "deep adoption of AI" makes it a useful case and an "early warning system" for how AI may affect jobs.
