"Cowork now has memory, and it's the same one you use in chat, leading to less re-explaining and more picking up where you left off," Anthropic said. "When Cowork runs a task in the cloud, what Claude remembers from your chats is there, and vice versa." The company said context built up over months of conversations is available the moment Cowork is given a task, and anything that comes up in Cowork carries back to chat.

Previously, memory was siloed: chat sessions stayed in the chatbot, and Cowork sessions were locked to Cowork. That forced users to start over when moving from planning to execution. The unified memory is intended to make Claude feel like one continuous assistant rather than two separate products.

Under the update, Claude adds topics to memory as the user chats, instead of summarizing a conversation after it ends. Users can pause or reset memory at any time. Memories are organized by topic under Memory settings, where they can be read, edited, or deleted.

Anthropic also added stricter controls for sensitive information. By default, Claude does not store topics related to health, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, politics, gender identity, and similar areas. Users can turn on an "include sensitive topics in memory" toggle, after which Claude will add those subjects but will show a notice each time it does so. The company said Claude will not retroactively save past conversations.

Even with sensitive topics enabled, Anthropic says Claude will never store Social Security numbers, government ID numbers, criminal history, immigration status, or anything that violates its Acceptable Use Policy.

Memory is on by default for Free, Pro, and Max plans across web, desktop, and mobile. On Android and iOS, users need to update to the latest version of the Claude app. ZDNet reported that for Enterprise and Teams accounts, memory features and sensitive-topic saving are off by default and subject to eligibility. ZDNet also noted that Anthropic's announcement did not mention Claude Code, and the update is focused on chat and Cowork.
