Apple Adds Custom EQ to AirPods in Firmware Update 9A350

Apple's new AirPods firmware adds a three-band custom EQ in Settings for H2-chip models, alongside other iOS 27 AirPods features including an Adaptive Audio slider and GymKit on iPhone.

According to 9to5Mac, the firmware covers AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 5, AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro 2 in both Lightning and USB-C versions, and AirPods Max 2. Apple installs AirPods firmware automatically while the earbuds are charging and within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad or Mac connected to Wi-Fi. Users can check the installed version in the Settings app on iPhone.

Once the firmware is installed, the custom EQ appears in the AirPods section of Settings under the Audio and Routing menu. Listeners can adjust the lows, mids and highs, and while adjusting the settings they can play a song from Apple Music inside the Settings app to hear the changes in real time. 9to5Mac described the tool as a basic three-band system rather than an advanced equalizer, and said most users will likely keep the default levels.

Apple described the feature this way: "AirPods are designed and engineered by Apple to faithfully represent music, TV shows and movies, and calls. If you prefer a different sound profile, you can customize how AirPods represent any audio played."

The report lists custom EQ as available on all AirPods with an H2 chip, which it identifies as AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods Max 2. That group differs from the firmware roll-out list, which names AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case but not AirPods 4.

iOS 27 brings other changes to AirPods as well. Apple redesigned the AirPods interface in the Settings app, reorganizing controls into separate menus for Hearing Health, Find My, Live Translation and other items. A new slider lets users fine-tune Adaptive Audio mode.

GymKit, which previously required an Apple Watch, now works through iPhone with AirPods Pro 3, according to the report. Precision Finding for AirPods Pro 3 is available through the Find My app on Apple Watch, and AirPods can interact with Siri AI when paired to a compatible iPhone.
