Apple Adds Four New Apple Pay Features as Walmart Begins Accepting the Service
Apple has introduced a redesigned iOS 27 checkout screen, American Express rewards redemption, Tap to Share for in-store purchases and debit card top-ups, while Walmart has started rolling out Apple Pay support in the United States.
The first change is a redesigned checkout interface in iOS 27, which was released to all users last week and can be installed from the Settings app on an iPhone. On the main Apple Pay checkout screen for websites and apps, users can swipe between cards or tap a card to open a grid showing all of their available Apple Pay cards. The new design also makes it easier to see information tied to individual cards, including rewards, balances and pay later options.
Apple and American Express have also announced a partnership that allows shoppers to pay with Membership Rewards points. When checking out online or in an app with an American Express card, users see a “Use Rewards” option next to their available points balance and can apply points to cover all or part of a purchase inside the Apple Pay checkout flow. Points redeemed this way are valued at 0.7 cents each, so 10,000 points can be applied as $70 toward a purchase.
A third feature, Tap to Share, is being added in iOS 27 and works with Apple Pay for in-store shopping. The company describes it as an extension of Tap to Pay on iPhone. With a single tap, a customer can connect to a participating merchant’s iPhone and share information such as email and other contact details, a shipping address and loyalty rewards information. Shoppers can also view the items in their basket in real time to track what they have bought and confirm that sales and discounts have been applied, then complete the checkout on their own iPhone using Apple Pay.
Apple Pay users at select banks will additionally be able to manage debit card balances through the payment interface, adding money to a supported debit card directly in Apple Wallet or while checking out, according to Apple.
The largest change is not a feature built by Apple. Walmart has announced that it is finally starting to roll out support for Apple Pay, with Sam’s Club included in the same effort. The retailer began the rollout this week in Arkansas and says it will bring Apple Pay and broader contactless payments to all of its United States stores by the end of this year.
9to5Mac, which reported the features, noted that Apple Pay remains its author’s default payment method both online and in stores.
Editor's Summary
Apple has introduced four Apple Pay updates: a redesigned iOS 27 checkout screen, American Express Membership Rewards redemption at 0.7 cents per point, Tap to Share for in-store purchases and debit card top-ups at select banks. Separately, Walmart and Sam’s Club have begun accepting Apple Pay in Arkansas and expect nationwide coverage by the end of the year. The combination expands both the service’s capabilities and the number of locations where iPhone users can pay with it.
