Apple Adds M6 Chip to iMac and 14-Inch MacBook Pro, Sets Oct. 28 Preorders

Apple unveils M6 iMac and 14-inch MacBook Pro, citing faster AI and graphics, with preorders Oct. 28.

The iMac moves from the M4 to the M6, which Apple says delivers up to five times the performance of the M4 for AI-powered tasks. ZDNet reported that the iMac's M6 is offered in 12- or 16-core versions and can be configured with up to a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators, which Apple says doubles graphics processing speed compared with the previous iMac. Apple also claims twice the AI computation speed of the M4, support for running large language models on the device and improved ray tracing for gaming.

The 24.5-inch Retina display has 4.5K resolution and 500 nits of peak brightness. The 2026 iMac adds Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and a 2.5Gb Ethernet port, which Apple says is 2.5 times faster than the 2024 model for large transfers. Apple says the integrated SSD offers up to twice the read and write speeds of the M4-era iMac, and the machine has up to four Thunderbolt 4 ports and can connect to two external 6K displays. It ships with macOS 27, which Apple says supports upcoming Apple Intelligence features, Siri AI and an updated Liquid Glass interface. The base configuration starts at $1,499 and comes in seven colors: blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange and silver. Apple describes the iMac as its primary gateway device, with the Magic Keyboard and mouse included and one cable to plug in.

The standard 14-inch MacBook Pro also receives the M6, according to a Slashdot report citing The Verge, one day before a touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected to debut. Apple says the M6 is its first 2nm chip and has a 12-core CPU, up from 10 cores in the M5, with up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded performance than its predecessor. The chip includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine for on-device AI tasks and a 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each core. Apple also says the processor is more power efficient.

The laptop has three Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports that support charging and DisplayPort, a MagSafe 3 charging port, full-size HDMI and an SDXC card slot. Pricing starts at $1,999 with 16GB of memory, the same starting price as last year's M5 model. Preorders begin Oct. 28, and shipping is expected to start Nov. 6.
