Apple Adds 'Made for iPhone Duo' Badge as Early Preorders Ship
Apple launched a 'Made for iPhone Duo' App Store badge and marked early preorders as shipped, as a supply-chain report said first-year shipment targets rose to 14 million units.
The Verge reported that the badge will appear across apps and games that use the Duo’s larger inner screen and outer display. Apple did not provide an image of the badge, but it described how several major apps are adapting to the device. Netflix will show movies and shows across the entire inner display while offering its short-form clip feed on the outside screen, according to Apple.
Amazon’s Prime Video will let users watch shows and movies with the Duo partially folded, placing content on the top half and cast details on the bottom, Apple said. Microsoft Word and Outlook will offer what Apple called a “desktop-class” experience, with Word putting formatting tools beside a document and Outlook showing an inbox next to a full email. Zoom can display a video conference alongside shared content on the inner screen. Other optimized apps include Paramount Plus, NYT Cooking, Yelp, Lyft, and United Airlines.
The Verge’s Nilay Patel found during testing that some apps labeled as optimized for the Duo, including Instagram, still had bugs. Apple said it will launch editorial collections for the iPhone Duo on Friday and that additional app updates will roll out throughout the year. The device starts at $1,999 and goes on sale Friday, with limited quantities available on a walk-in basis.
9to5Mac reported that Apple has started marking early iPhone Duo preorders with launch-day delivery as “shipped.” Some users, including Stephen Robles, said on X that their orders had been updated. Customers can check status in the Apple Store app’s For You tab; Apple tracks orders through Processing, Preparing to Ship, Shipped, and Delivered stages. For buyers quoted an October 23 delivery whose orders do not yet show as shipped, 9to5Mac reported that preorders are often in transit before the app updates the status.
When iPhone Duo preorders opened, delivery estimates slipped within about a minute, with some dates moving into late January. Apple attributed the delays to “extraordinary” demand for its first folding iPhone, a phrase it frequently uses for new iPhone launches, and limited orders to two per customer to curb scalping. It was not immediately clear whether the slippage reflected demand or supply; the DigiTimes report, citing supply-chain sources, said Apple has ramped up production and expects strong demand to continue. Some customers who initially received later estimates were subsequently given earlier shipping dates, 9to5Mac reported.
Apple has said app support for the iPhone Duo is improving rapidly as developers update their software. Early reviews based on a week of use consistently identified app support as one of five key takeaways, according to 9to5Mac, and also cited the downgrade to Touch ID. A report published Thursday said Apple is already testing iPhone Duo 2 prototypes with Face ID.
