Apple and LG partner on smart home devices starting with doorbell, lock and thermostat

Apple is working with LG on a line of smart home devices, including a video doorbell, smart deadbolt, thermostat and security cameras, Bloomberg reports. The LG-branded products are expected to be shown next week, but they may not reach consumers for months.

Bloomberg said the collaboration also covers an indoor security camera, an outdoor security camera, a floodlight camera and a temperature sensor. LG has handled manufacturing and product support, and in recent weeks has sought regulatory approval for the devices, including from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and UL Solutions. Filings listed names including LG Video Doorbell Wired, LG Floodlight Cam, LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In, LG Indoor Cam Plug-In, LG Smart Deadbolt Lock, LG Smart Thermostat and LG Temperature Sensor. LG asked that photos and more precise product details remain confidential until early next year. The filings do not mention Apple's involvement. Bloomberg described the effort as a formal reboot of HomeKit.

The devices are expected to be announced, if not formally released, next week, according to TechCrunch and Engadget. They would complement Apple's smart home hub, which Bloomberg has reported is set to launch during an event on October 13 and includes a six-inch square display that can sit on a countertop or be mounted on a wall. Apple is also expected to introduce an updated Apple TV and a new HomePod mini next week. Bloomberg reported that the LG accessories are not expected to reach consumers for at least a few more months.

Several of the LG devices will support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread and Matter, according to Bloomberg. The smart lock will also include ultra-wideband, or UWB, which can enable proximity-based features such as automatically unlocking a door when a user approaches.

Bloomberg described the arrangement as a second-party development deal. Apple and LG worked together on the accessories, but the products will be sold under LG's brand, with the South Korean company handling manufacturing and support. The structure gives Apple a way to expand its home ecosystem faster without taking on the full cost and complexity of producing and supporting a broad set of accessories. Apple can shape design, tailor features and oversee engineering while keeping much of the work under wraps.

For LG, the lineup represents a broader move into smart home products. The company is known for appliances and large electronics, though it has partnered with Apple in other areas, including offering Apple software through its smart TVs, serving as a third-party monitor option for Macs and producing panels for Apple's Studio Display and Studio Display XDR monitors.

The report comes as Apple has been working for months on a deeper smart home push. Bloomberg has reported that Apple is developing a Siri AI-enabled smart home hub with a six-inch display, as well as future products including a privacy-centric home-monitoring device, a version of its smart home hub that attaches the screen to a robotic arm, and an in-home security monitoring service. TechCrunch described the LG device lineup as a potential challenge to Amazon's smart home offerings, which include Ring security cameras. TechCrunch said it reached out to Apple for more information.
