Apple Calendar in iOS 27 Adds Smart Event Details, iCloud Busy/Free and Extra-Large Widgets

Apple's iOS 27 adds natural-language event entry powered by Apple Intelligence, redesigned event views, busy/free status for iCloud calendars, extra-large Calendar widgets, and new Siri capabilities, according to 9to5Mac.

The most significant addition, per 9to5Mac, is a feature Apple calls Smart Event Details. Powered by Apple Intelligence, it lets users type events in their own words; Apple Intelligence then fills in the title, time, location and invitees as the user types. The feature works for both events and reminders, and applies when creating or editing an event. Users who prefer manual entry can turn the feature off in Settings, the report said.

Design updates appear in two main areas: event details and event creation and editing. When a user taps an event, it now appears in a card overlay with a new design. Event options have been reorganized and given icons. The creation and editing screens also have an updated look, with options reorganized and icons added for each category, according to the report.

iOS 27 also adds a show as busy/free option for iCloud calendars. Although the option has existed for Google calendars inside Apple's app and other third-party providers, 9to5Mac reported that it had been missing for iCloud calendars until this release. The update brings iCloud events in line with those providers.

Calendar supports two extra-large widgets in iOS 27: List and Up Next. The new size is larger than previous Home Screen and Today widget options, allowing more events and reminders to be displayed. The report noted that extra-large widgets occupy significant screen space but could be useful on devices with larger displays, specifically mentioning the iPhone Duo's extra-large display.

Siri AI upgrades also affect Calendar. According to 9to5Mac, Siri gains onscreen awareness, understands personal context, and is more intelligent and capable than before, making it better for managing calendar items. A new visual intelligence button in the event creation screen lets users scan an event flyer using the new Siri mode in the Camera app; Siri then creates a new event with the details.

The report said the natural language feature had been on the author's wishlist for years, and that in using iOS 27 the author relied more on Siri for handling events and reminders. The update is part of a broader iOS 27 release that includes new features for Apple Wallet, Messages, Notes and other system apps, 9to5Mac reported.
