Apple Confirms iPhone Duo's Matte Screen Layer Is Replaceable, at $19 With AppleCare Plus
Apple has confirmed the matte layer on the iPhone Duo's inner screen can be replaced, reportedly costing $19 with AppleCare Plus, while Samsung swaps the protector free in the first year.
Apple vice-president Kate Bergeron said in a video posted on TikTok by @angietutorials that the matte display coating "does a really nice job of, I'll say minimizing the crease," adding that a cover layer sits on top of the panel. "We've done a significant amount of engineering work to help that wear in as long of a manner as we can to make sure that you get the most out of that layer's performance," she said. "It's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one."
Bergeron did not describe the layer as user-replaceable. Android Authority reported that she most likely meant customers can have it replaced at an authorized repair outlet, which is how every foldable launched so far handles the plastic screen protector bonded to its inner display. Those protectors are not intended to be peeled off by owners, because doing so can damage the folding panel, and the same caution applies to the iPhone Duo's matte layer.
On price, Android Authority, citing Quinn Nelson on X, reported that replacing the iPhone Duo's matte screen layer costs $19 with AppleCare Plus. Apple has not updated its support page with pricing for customers who do not hold the plan, so the cost without it could be higher.
Samsung's terms differ. The company provides one free screen protector replacement within 12 months of buying a Galaxy Flip or Fold device and charges $19.99 for each subsequent application, according to Android Authority. The first replacement covers scratches and scuffs at no charge, and later swaps land at roughly the same price Apple quotes with AppleCare Plus.
Editor's Summary Apple has confirmed that the matte layer on the iPhone Duo's inner display is replaceable, with Android Authority reporting a $19 fee under AppleCare Plus and no published price yet for customers without the plan. Samsung covers the first protector replacement free within a year of buying a Flip or Fold, then charges $19.99 each time. Both policies keep the work at authorized repair outlets rather than leaving it to device owners.
