Apple Execs Push Back on Samsung Display Claim for iPhone Duo
Apple execs said iPhone Duo parts are custom-designed with partners, rejecting claims it simply uses a Samsung display.
Apple is widely reported to have Samsung as a key supplier for the iPhone Duo's folding display. The relationship has led some to claim that Apple is simply using a Samsung display. The interview, conducted last month with three Apple staff involved in the iPhone Duo's development, was posted on YouTube yesterday, according to 9to5Mac.
In the interview, MrMobile's Michael Fisher asked Rich Dinh, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, and JP Guillou, senior director of display technology for iPhone, what on the device comes straight from the Samsung factory and what is designed by Apple.
Dinh said everything Apple designs internally starts from servicing the end experience. He said that whether the component is the display, hinge, enclosure or chip, Apple works with a number of manufacturers, but starts by asking what it is trying to accomplish in the design and what challenges it is trying to solve. Apple then works with manufacturers to help develop those parts, he said.
Fisher then contrasted the display and hinge, suggesting that Apple receives a pallet of 'display things' from Samsung to make the iPhone Duo, and that the hinge is not included and is made by Apple. Guillou responded that the display does not exist at the vendor until Apple starts working on it.
Fisher followed up by saying the vendor does not start working until Apple places an order with its specifications. Dinh said there is no 'pre-cooked shelf of components' Apple can choose from. Guillou said there certainly are no such components that would meet Apple's demands, expectations, requirements and specifications. When Fisher said everything is a custom order, Guillou replied, 'Everything is.' Dinh added that Apple started from the ground up and that while it works with partners to manufacture its designs, it customizes down to the nanometer.
The video also covered the iPhone Duo's durability, the choice to use an under-display camera on the folding screen, and how Apple approaches product design, according to 9to5Mac.
