Apple Expands Tap to Pay on iPhone to Eight More Latin American Markets

Apple said Tap to Pay on iPhone is now live in Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Peru, backed by six regional payment platforms.

The company published the expansion in its Latin America and the Caribbean Newsroom, according to a report by 9to5Mac. The new markets are Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and Peru, with support from six payment platforms across the region.

The platforms gaining support differ by country. Mercado Pago covers Argentina. Colombia gains SumUp and Symbiotic. Costa Rica gains Geopagos, Symbiotic and Visa Acceptance Solutions. The Dominican Republic gains Azul and Visa Acceptance Solutions. Geopagos and Symbiotic are the providers for Guatemala, Honduras and Panama, while SumUp serves Peru.

Apple said Tap to Pay on iPhone works with contactless debit and credit cards from major payment networks, including American Express, Mastercard and Visa. The feature removes the need for merchants to buy additional card readers or payment terminals, since the iPhone itself handles the transaction through the supported payment app.

Apple first announced Tap to Pay on iPhone on February 8, 2022, initially for the United States, with Stripe named as the first payment platform set to support it. Since then the feature has reached 59 countries and regions, and Apple's current list names more than 100 payment service providers worldwide, counting the additions announced today.
