Apple M6 debuts in Mac mini with super and performance cores

Apple's M6 chip debuts in Mac mini, becoming the first base chip with both super and performance cores.

The M6 is also Apple's first 2-nanometer chip, according to the report. It has 12 CPU cores in total: two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores. Apple also introduced the M5 Ultra, which the report said is Apple's first chip with a quad-die architecture.

Earlier this year, Apple renamed its previous performance cores as super cores and added a new middle-tier core type that carries the performance name, a change that first appeared in the M5 Pro and M5 Max. 9to5Mac's Chance Miller explained that the super cores are Apple's most powerful CPU cores and were formerly called performance cores. The new performance cores are a middle tier in the M5 architecture, designed to balance power efficiency and multi-threaded performance.

Until this week, the M5 Pro and M5 Max were the only chips with both super and performance cores. Now the M5 Ultra and the base M6 also offer Apple's two most powerful CPU core types. Previous base chips, such as the M5, had only two types of CPU cores. With the M6, users get all three: super, performance, and efficiency. 9to5Mac said the change is one of the reasons the base M6 is an especially exciting year-over-year upgrade.
