Apple Makes iOS 27.0.1 the Default Update for Users on iOS 26

Apple has changed the recommended Software Update for iPhones still on iOS 26 to iOS 27.0.1, according to 9to5Mac, after initially keeping iOS 26.7 as the default option.

When Apple first released iOS 27 to all users, it did not present the new version as the primary update in Settings. Users instead saw iOS 26.7 as the recommended update, while iOS 27 appeared in a smaller “Also Available” section on the Software Update screen. That approach reflected Apple’s gradual rollout of major iOS releases in recent years.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple holds back the default recommendation because new bugs can emerge after a public launch even after a months-long beta process. The company wants an opportunity to address those issues before pushing the update to its full user base. The release of iOS 27.0.1 provided that opportunity.

With iOS 27.0.1 now available, users who are still on iOS 26 will see the newer version featured prominently when they open Settings, then General, then Software Update. They can still choose to remain on iOS 26. 9to5Mac reported that iOS 27 adoption is expected to accelerate now that Apple has made it the primary update in Settings.

The timing differs from last year, when Apple waited until after iOS 26.1 was available before recommending a switch from iOS 18. Pushing iOS 27 earlier this year is described by 9to5Mac as a clear endorsement of Apple’s focus on bug fixes and stability in its latest major update.
