Apple Music Launches Rebrand With Logo Made by Sound
Apple officially unveiled a new Apple Music identity on Oct. 21, 2026, with a rippling logo, updated wordmark and a sound piece by Fred Again and NEST Acoustics. The logo was created with practical mineral-oil ripples and filmed in camera; app icon and rollout details are tied to iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2.
Like it did for the Apple TV rebrand, Apple published a behind-the-scenes video explaining that the new logo was created practically, 9to5Mac reported. In the video, Apple said the rebrand began with the goal of letting sound create the visuals. “For the rebrand of Apple Music, we wanted sound to create the visuals,” a narrator says, according to Engadget. Apple described the project as “a story of music, collaboration and craft with Fred again.. and NEST Acoustics” and said sound brought the Apple Music logo to life, captured entirely in camera.
Engadget reported how the logo was made: Apple etched the logo on the glass floor of a small tank, filled the tank with mineral oil, placed a transparent cover over the logo and then used an instrument to play a short series of tones. The tones caused the oil to ripple, and Apple filmed the result. The video shows the logo and wordmark underwater and how the water responded to sound, according to The Verge. Engadget reported that the motion-filled rippling logo will be used at the beginning of Apple Music videos and for concert footage.
The rebrand also changes the Apple Music app icon from red to black-and-white. Engadget reported that the icon change has not been a hit with people online. 9to5Mac reported that signs of the rebrand had appeared for weeks, including a fresh app icon and other design updates in iOS 27.2. The Verge reported that a redesigned wordmark had appeared in a video and an updated app icon had appeared in an iOS 27.2 beta before Apple introduced the identity.
Engadget said the changes are coming with Apple’s next software releases, including iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2. The Verge, citing Wallpaper, said the new look is expected to roll out across platforms “this week.” The Verge said it guessed that meant the look would appear in the final iOS 27.2 release, following the release candidate version of the update that launched that week.
