Apple Notes Adds Divider Lines, Section Links and Siri Integration in iOS 27

The divider feature lets users place a horizontal line anywhere in a note. After tapping the spot where the line should go, the user opens the edit menu and selects the new Insert Divider Line option. The tool joins the formatting controls Notes already offers and is intended to help separate blocks of content inside a single note.

Section links are now supported as well, aimed at making longer notes easier to navigate. To create one, a user selects text in the note and opens the edit menu, chooses Add Link and then the Link to Section option. A menu then lists the headings and subheadings already present in the note; selecting one embeds a direct link to that section in the text. According to 9to5Mac, the feature allows users to build a table of contents or another structure for jumping through a long note.

The change 9to5Mac described as the largest involves Siri. Under the new Siri AI, users can add information to a new note or an existing one in Notes. An answer Siri returns in the new Siri app can be sent to Notes, and users can also ask Siri to reformat a poorly formatted list and place the result in a new note. Existing notes can be targeted by telling Siri which note to use. Siri has offered limited Notes capabilities in the past, and the report describes the new integration as a substantial upgrade.

Notes also becomes more accommodating to Markdown in iOS 27. Pasting Markdown-formatted text into a note now converts it into rich text automatically, with no additional steps. A new Copy as Markdown option in the edit menu lets users copy text out of a note in Markdown syntax. Apple added Markdown import and export to Notes in iOS 26. Markdown is a plain-text formatting syntax created by John Gruber that uses special characters for headings, links, lists, bold and italic text, and is widely used by writers who publish online.

Separately, iOS 27 brings upgrades to the Image Playground app and the AI models behind it, which carry over to Notes because Image Playground is a built-in feature of the app. A new generative model running on Private Cloud Compute can create high-quality images in nearly any style, now including photorealistic output, according to the report. Images produced this way automatically carry a hidden SynthID watermark identifying them as AI-generated.

Apple has also made smaller interface adjustments in Notes: a refreshed app icon, Liquid Glass updates for buttons and menus, a new icon on the shared folder at the top of the folders list, and updated icons for individual shared folders and notes.
