Apple Pay announces four new features as Walmart rolls out support

Apple has announced four new features for Apple Pay, including a redesigned checkout interface and rewards redemption, while Walmart has started accepting the payment service in the U.S.

The redesigned checkout interface is among the most notable updates, coming with iOS 27, which is currently in beta. The new design makes it easier for users to switch between cards during checkout on websites and in apps. Users can swipe between cards on the main screen or tap a card to see a grid of all available cards. It also shows details such as rewards, balances, and pay later options. iOS 27 will be released to everyone this fall.

Apple and American Express have formed a partnership that allows customers to pay with Membership Rewards points. When shopping online or in apps with an American Express card, they will see a "Use Rewards" option alongside their points balance. Points can cover all or part of a purchase in the Apple Pay checkout flow, with each point valued at 0.7 cents, meaning 10,000 points equal $70.

"Tap to Share" is another new feature coming with iOS 27, launching this fall. It extends Tap to Pay on iPhone for in-store shopping. With a tap, customers can connect to a participating merchant's iPhone and securely share information such as email, contact details, shipping address, and loyalty rewards. They can also view their basket in real time to track purchases and confirm discounts, then complete checkout with Apple Pay.

Later this year, iPhone users will be able to manage debit card balances directly within Apple Pay. According to Apple, users can add money to a supported debit card from Apple Wallet or during checkout.

Walmart has announced it is finally rolling out Apple Pay support, with Sam's Club also included. The rollout began this week in Arkansas, and the retailer plans to launch it in all U.S. stores by the end of this year. This expansion is not an Apple-developed feature but a long-awaited addition for the retailer.
