Apple Pay Begins Rolling Out in India With Axis Bank as First Partner
Apple has started enabling Apple Pay in India with Axis Bank as its initial banking partner, according to TechCrunch, opening the service in one of the few major markets where it was still unavailable.
TechCrunch reported earlier on Tuesday that Apple Pay would launch in India later that day with Axis Bank as its initial banking partner. Aaron Perris subsequently spotted on X that Apple had started enabling Apple Pay support on its servers, indicating the rollout was under way.
According to an Apple support article, 100 countries and regions currently support Apple Pay. India has yet to appear on that list, which Apple will likely update before long.
India has quickly become one of Apple's most strategically important countries, both for manufacturing and for consumer growth. The company has expanded its retail presence there and has repeatedly pointed to strong growth in the country during quarterly earnings calls. Apple and its suppliers have also been shifting more iPhone production to India as part of a broader effort to diversify manufacturing beyond China.
That expansion has brought complications. Apple is fighting an antitrust case brought by the Competition Commission of India over its App Store practices, and it has refused to comply with a government order requiring smartphone makers to preinstall a state-run app on new devices. Tata Electronics, an Apple manufacturing partner, has also drawn scrutiny after an Indian pollution regulator alleged that wastewater from one of its iPhone component factories contaminated groundwater and nearby farmland. Tata was recently the target of a cyberattack that allegedly exposed confidential files from several companies, including Apple.
The India launch extends Apple's wider expansion in the country and arrives at a potentially useful moment for its Services business. In the last fiscal quarter, Apple recorded its first sequential drop in Services revenue since fiscal Q4 2022. India is unlikely to change that on its own, but with iPhone sales reaching record levels in the country, Apple Pay offers another way to build on that momentum.
