Apple Pencil Support Reaches the iPhone, Limited to the iPhone Duo and One Stylus Model

Apple Pencil support is coming to an iPhone for the first time, but only on the iPhone Duo, only with the USB-C model and only after a later iOS update.

For years the stylus was an iPad-only accessory, and no other Apple product, including Macs and iPhones, worked with it. The iPhone Duo changes that as part of a broader hardware and software overhaul of how the iPhone operates. It also runs against the argument Apple made when the iPhone was first introduced, that a stylus is not a good input method.

Support will not arrive at launch. Apple has not provided many details, but the Pencil requires an iOS update due later this year, Engadget reported. The iPhone Duo is expected to ship with iOS 27.1 in October, and Pencil support could arrive with iOS 27.2 around November.

Even with the correct software, only the Apple Pencil USB-C is compatible with the iPhone Duo. Owners of an Apple Pencil 2 or Apple Pencil Pro cannot use them with the phone and would have to spend an additional $79 on the compatible stylus. Apple was not specific about the reason, but the likely explanation is that the iPhone lacks the magnets needed to attach and charge the Pencil. On compatible iPads the stylus attaches magnetically to charge, while pairing and charging on the iPhone Duo requires plugging it in with a USB-C cable.

The Pencil works with both screens on the iPhone Duo, the large display when unfolded and the outer screen, which Apple presents as useful for quick jottings as well as longer handwritten notes and drawing. Carrying a large stylus alongside a phone may not be convenient, but the option exists for users who want it. Other iPhones do not support the Apple Pencil.

The USB-C Apple Pencil carries drawbacks beyond pairing and charging. Unlike the Apple Pencil Pro, it lacks a pressure sensor and the double-tap gesture, and it offers neither haptic feedback nor the squeeze feature. Find My support is also missing. Those capabilities remain exclusive to the more advanced Apple Pencil Pro.

Engadget reported that Apple is rumored to have refreshed Apple Pencils ready sometime next year. Little is known about them beyond an expectation of replaceable batteries, though Apple could introduce a new Apple Pencil Pro built for the iPhone Duo, or a Pencil designed exclusively for it.
