Apple Plans Server Return With Possible Nvidia Tie-Up, Report Says

The Verge reports, citing The Information, that Apple is planning to re-enter servers and may partner with Nvidia, with a possible 2029 product using M8 Ultra chips.

According to the report, the growth of the AI industry and demand for compute power have led Apple to see an opening for its ARM-based M processors, which are described as powerful but efficient. Apple's Mac Mini and Mac Studio have already proved popular with AI developers, the report says, and that demand has led to shortages.

The server product, whether it is called Xserve or something else, is unlikely to debut until 2029, according to the report. It is expected to run on two or four M8 Ultra chips, depending on the model. Apple only announced the M6 in August, so the M8 line remains a ways out.

It is also rumored that Apple's servers could incorporate Nvidia's NVLink Fusion technology, which connects multiple chips together so they can operate as one. The Verge notes that the two companies have historically had a frosty relationship behind the scenes, but Apple recently turned to Nvidia chips to power its revamped Siri servers. Incorporating NVLink could lead to further collaboration between Apple and Nvidia, though the report says plans could still change.
