Apple Preps Major Retail Revamp for New Home Products, M6 iMac Expected This Year

Apple is preparing significant retail changes for new Home products and an M6 iMac by year-end, per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In the latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said Apple is planning "significant changes" to its store sections this fall, including rearranging parts of the Avenues and adding accessory bays to showcase new products. While the company already plans an upgraded Apple TV set-top box and a new HomePod mini for this time frame, the scale of the retail changes suggests a third, more significant product is on the way: the home hub with a display. The planned modifications "appear too extensive to be solely about routine updates to existing products," he wrote.

As previously rumored, Apple's smart home hub is expected to feature a 7-inch square display and come in two versions: one with a built-in speaker and another with magnets on the rear for wall mounting. It would run a new OS offering widgets on the home screen, support FaceTime calls, and serve as the hub for smart home accessories and Siri, powered by an A18 chip. Additionally, the new Apple TV 4K might offer a refreshed Siri Remote, though details remain unclear.

Apple has had a long backlog of Home products pending release, largely due to delays involving the company's Siri revamp. With Siri now coming together, these devices could finally reach the market after years without a refresh.

For the Mac lineup, Apple is preparing a new iMac with the M6 chipset and "some new color options," per Gurman. The iMac skipped the M2 and M5 families and has not received a larger display option, with Apple directing high-end users to Mac Studio or Mac mini with Studio Display. The M6 iMac is expected to be available before the end of the year.

This fall could be a major one for the Mac, with overhauled MacBook Pro models featuring touchscreens and Tandem OLED, a new base-model 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6, new M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studios, and the M6 iMac. A refreshed Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro is also possible, though likely later. Apple's M6 chip will be the first Mac chip based on the new 2nm process, and reportedly there won't be M6 Pro, M6 Max, or M6 Ultra, with the company instead accelerating the launch of the M7 family.
