Apple Refurbished vs. Amazon Renewed vs. Walmart Restored: What You Get for Your Money

Apple guarantees that each certified refurbished unit undergoes full inspection and testing by Apple itself. The devices receive a brand new outer shell, a brand new battery, and all original accessories and cables. The standard one-year Apple warranty applies just as it does to new products, and buyers are eligible for AppleCare+. The only visible difference is that products ship in a plain white box instead of original packaging. Refurbished models typically become available about three months after a product launch.

Amazon Renewed can offer more competitive pricing, but it does not provide the same guarantees. Inspection and testing are performed by the third-party seller, not Apple. The outer shell is used, so marks and scratches are possible, while the battery is used and only guaranteed to exceed 80% of its original capacity. Accessories may not be genuine Apple accessories. Amazon provides a 90-day warranty instead of Apple's one-year coverage. For cosmetic condition, Amazon uses three tiers: Premium/Excellent, which shows no cosmetic damage when held 12 inches away; Good, with light scratches barely visible at the same distance; and Acceptable, with scratches that are easily seen and felt.

Walmart Restored is considerably vaguer in its promises. Inspection and testing are also done by the seller, but Walmart makes no promises about the cosmetic condition, only guaranteeing 'like-new performance and reliability.' It provides no specifics on battery condition or what accessories are included. Warranty coverage depends on the tier: one year for the Restored Premium tier, and 90 days for Like New, Good, and Fair tiers. The company does not clearly define these tier categories.

In its assessment, 9to5Mac recommends Apple's Certified Refurbished store for anyone who wants a product indistinguishable from new in both condition and warranty. For buyers willing to accept the trade-offs, Amazon Renewed can deliver significantly lower prices. The report points to several Amazon Renewed listings for iPhone 17 Pro models as examples, including a 1TB Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro at $1,214 (regularly $1,499 new) and a 512GB Silver model at $1,208, both described as all-time lows. Walmart Restored, however, raises concerns because of the vagueness of its guarantees, although customers retain the option to return unsatisfactory items.
