Apple releases 27.2 release candidates and sets Oct. 28 launch event

Apple released release candidates for iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 Golden Gate, plus third RCs for two older macOS versions, and announced an Oct. 28 product event in Los Angeles.

The invitation, sent to media and analysts, described an "Apple Experience in Los Angeles" and used the phrase "Pro and tell," CNBC reported. Ben Reitzes of Melius Research wrote in a note Monday that he expects new Macs to be introduced this fall, including a touchscreen notebook. He said the launch cadence under CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook last month, marks a shift from two events a year. It would be Apple's third launch in Ternus' brief tenure, after an event for new iPhones including the foldable Duo and a New York gathering centered on smart home hubs and a screen-equipped speaker called HomeView. Apple updated its Mac Mini and Mac Studio desktops in August and its MacBook Pro in the spring, along with a new low-cost MacBook Neo, but the iMac desktop has not been updated since October 2024. Macs accounted for about 10% of overall revenue in the most recent quarter, CNBC reported, and Apple shares are up 26% so far this year. Last week, Apple and Meta teamed up to bring a large open-weight model developed by Meta to multiple high-end Mac Studios. Apple has historically been dismissive of touchscreen laptops, with software chief Craig Federighi saying in 2018 that the ergonomics would fatigue users.

On the software side, 9to5Mac reported that the first iOS 27.2 release candidate follows several beta versions and could be the version that reaches all users if testing does not require another build. The beta cycle introduced Group FaceTime Dual Capture, more Siri AI languages, profiles in the Apple TV app and changes to how Apple Podcasts organizes episodes. Apple Music has a new black-and-white app icon replacing the familiar red design, with blue highlighting the active tab inside the app. Apple pulled an overhauled Health app from testing after it appeared in earlier iOS 27.2 betas and restored the previous Health app in beta 4; the upgrade is still planned for release later this year.

Apple also released release candidates for iPadOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2 and more, 9to5Mac reported. Those builds are intended to be the exact software that ships to all users in the public release. The report said Apple is limiting 27.1 to iPhone Duo, so most devices are skipping straight to 27.2. Features include Suggested Actions in Messages, Apple TV profiles on iPad, the new Apple Music icon and updated design, an overhauled Up Next queue in Apple Podcasts, more Siri AI languages, new automation controls for compatible smart locks in Home, and a new Siri contextual popup on iPad. Apple is expected to launch these updates by the end of October, likely early next week.

The first macOS 27.2 Golden Gate release candidate, build 26B118, adds French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish to Siri AI, which launched last month with English-only support. 9to5Mac reported that macOS 27.2 also includes new gesture recognition tools in several built-in apps, possibly laying groundwork for the touchscreen MacBook Pro expected at this month's event. A beta 4 bug caused windows in Electron-based apps to randomly stop responding to dragging attempts; restarting the Mac temporarily resolved the issue.

For older Macs, Apple rolled out third release candidates for macOS Sequoia 15.8.2 and macOS Tahoe 26.7.2 alongside macOS 27.2 RC 1, 9to5Mac reported. Release notes mention only "important security fixes" and say the updates are "recommended for all users." The Sequoia build is 24H230 and the Tahoe build is 25G330. Apple released Sequoia 15.8.1 and Tahoe 26.7.1 late last month after two release candidates each, and the official release of the new builds is likely in the next few weeks alongside macOS 27.2.

Editor's Summary

Apple has moved iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 Golden Gate to release-candidate stage, while older macOS versions received third RCs focused on security fixes. The company also scheduled an Oct. 28 event in Los Angeles, where analysts expect new Macs and possibly a touchscreen notebook. The software releases are expected within weeks, with the 27.2 updates likely arriving by the end of October.
