Apple releases iOS 27.0.1 to fix Face ID restarts on iPhone 18 Pro

Apple has begun rolling out iOS 27.0.1, which stops iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max handsets from restarting when Face ID fails to authenticate, and also fixes a 2x zoom color artifact and a Control Center glitch.

Owners of the new phones had reported the restarts in the weeks before the release, according to Engadget. Some customers received replacement devices from Apple, but the problem persisted on the new units. Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac in September that it would issue a software update to address the issue, and iOS 27.0.1 is that release.

The update carries two other fixes for the iPhone 18 Pro. One corrects a color artifact that appeared in photos taken at the 2x zoom level. The other resolves a glitch that left devices unresponsive when users opened the Notification Center and Control Center at the same time. That fault caused no lasting damage and could be cleared with a forced reboot, though not every owner knew the phone would resume normal operation after restarting.

Installing the update manually takes a few steps: open the Settings app, select General, then Software Update. When iOS 27.0.1 appears, tap Download and Install. The download time depends on the user's internet connection, and the iPhone reboots during the process.

Users still running iOS 26 may instead see iOS 26.7 on the Software Update screen. That release is specific to the iPhone 17 and earlier models and provides security patches only, for those who do not want to move to iOS 27 yet. Skipping iOS 27 means going without features such as Siri AI and the Liquid Glass tweaks. To move from iOS 26 to iOS 27, users tap the iOS 27.0.1 banner on the Software Update screen, which skips the iOS 26.7 update.
