Apple Releases iOS 27 With Siri AI Waitlist as New Betas Arrive

Apple's iOS 27 is now public, but its headline Siri AI feature requires a waitlist. Apple also shipped new 27.2 betas and macOS security release candidates.

Siri AI is a comprehensive rebuild of Apple's virtual assistant. It supports conversational input similar to ChatGPT and Gemini, and it shares many underpinnings with Gemini because Apple partnered with Google to build semi-custom AI models, according to Engadget. Apple has also integrated Siri more deeply into the operating system, giving it access to emails, messages and other on-device content.

Despite the public release of iOS 27, Siri AI is not immediately available to everyone. Users must manually enable the feature and join a waitlist. Engadget reported that the option appears under Settings, then Siri, then Try Siri AI (Beta). Users may need to set their language to English (United States) and their region to the United States. Support for French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Korean is expected in October 2026.

Not all devices that run iOS 27 can use Siri AI. Engadget reported that the feature requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer; the non-Pro iPhone 15 models do not support it. On iPad, users need a seventh-generation iPad mini with A17 Pro or an iPad with an M1 processor or later. Apple has restricted Siri's Expressive Voices and Advanced Dictation features to the iPhone 17 Pro and newer models, because those features require more powerful hardware.

Apple Account regions set to China or a European Union country cannot join the Siri AI waitlist. Engadget reported that the European Commission has required Apple to give rival AI companies equal access to the same underlying system data that Siri AI uses, citing the Digital Markets Act. Apple pushed back, arguing that opening access to third parties could threaten user privacy. The company says its Private Cloud Compute system for Siri AI is designed to prevent eavesdropping and data collection.

Engadget reported that several aspects of Siri AI rely on advanced models. The assistant can access personal context from apps, read on-screen content and pull information from the web. Some tasks run on the device's Neural Engine, while more complex tasks depend on cloud servers. A waitlist lets Apple balance demand against available computational load and prevent slowdowns for users who already have access. If Siri AI were enabled by default, the company could waste resources on users who did not want to upgrade. Some users have reported gaining access within a day of joining the waitlist, while others waited longer. Devices may display "Optimizing Search and Siri" while building the personal context database. During the iPhone 18 Pro keynote, Apple said it will offer expanded AI usage limits with paid iCloud+ plans in the future, though it did not provide details. For now, daily usage limits depend on server load, request complexity and other factors.

In the meantime, Apple is continuing its beta cycle. 9to5Mac reported that the second iOS 27.2 developer beta arrived five days after the first, and that iOS 27.1 is focused on the iPhone Duo. The first iOS 27.2 beta included a redesigned Health app, dual capture mode for Group FaceTime, Siri AI language support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, Apple TV app profiles on iPhone, changes to Apple Podcasts, and a tweak to Apple Music labels. The second beta is likely to focus on bug fixes and performance, according to 9to5Mac.

Beta 2 is also available for iPadOS 27.2, watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2 and visionOS 27.2. 9to5Mac reported that the iPadOS 27.2 beta cycle includes Apple TV profiles for iPhone and iPad, the redesigned Health app, expanded Siri AI languages, and an iPadOS Siri feature that was previously exclusive to the Mac. Apple also released macOS 27.2 Golden Gate beta 2, with release build 26B5091g, after introducing Siri AI support for five additional languages in beta 1. Separately, Apple rolled out second release candidates for macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1. 9to5Mac reported the builds are 25G313 and 24H212, respectively, and that Apple describes the updates as providing important security fixes recommended for all users. Security details are expected when the updates launch officially in the coming weeks.

Third-party apps are also adopting the new platform features. 9to5Mac reported that CardPointers 8 has been released for iOS 27 with Siri AI integration, automatic offer syncing, new widgets and other tools. The app can connect accounts at Amex, Chase, Citi, Bank of America, US Bank and Wells Fargo and sync offers nightly. It adds 36 App Intents and on-screen awareness for finding, redeeming, updating and sharing offers, plus Visual Intelligence, eight extra-large widgets, an Offer Savings dashboard, AI-generated custom offers and summaries, and a Mac menu bar app.
