Apple releases Xcode 27.1 beta 1 for iPhone Duo app development

Apple released Xcode 27.1 beta 1, letting developers build apps for the foldable iPhone Duo before October.

The release comes before the iPhone Duo's October launch. 9to5Mac reported that while the device is not yet available, the beta gives developers a chance to prepare for initial iPhone Duo support. Properly optimizing most apps for the iPhone Duo will probably take more than a few weeks, but Xcode 27.1 meets Apple's promise to release development tools before the end of September.

Developers building against Apple's iOS 26 SDK will need to update their apps for iOS 27 to provide basic iPhone Duo support, 9to5Mac reported. Apps made for iOS 27.1 and later will take full advantage of the larger display. The report said there are many sizing and layout considerations developers need to address when shipping proper app support. The Xcode 27.1 beta also includes an iPhone Duo simulator, allowing developers to virtually experience their apps on the device.

Xcode 27.1 beta is available to download from Apple's developer webpage. The release follows the introduction of Xcode 27.2 beta earlier this week, according to 9to5Mac.

9to5Mac reported that Apple is shipping iOS 27.2 as the next software update for iPhones running iOS 27.0, with the exception of the iPhone Duo. The foldable device will run iOS 27.1, a version designed for it, before syncing up with the rest of the iPhone lineup in a later version.

The iPhone Duo will be available for pre-order on October 16 and ships October 23. Pricing starts at $1999.
