Apple Reportedly Developing Smart Home Camera That Does Not Record Video
Apple reportedly developing a smart home camera that records no video, using AI for text descriptions, per Mark Gurman.
The camera is described as part of a program called J450, an offshoot and companion product to the J490 smart home display, Gurman said. The small cylindrical cameras, which he compared to a metal giant chapstick, would be placed around a house and have very low frame rates.
According to Gurman, the camera does not record video. It uses a sensor that cannot actually pull in real video footage, and it analyzes the environment in and around a home using AI. Gurman also said the camera uses technology very similar to what Apple is reportedly developing for a pair of AirPods with cameras that leaked earlier this year.
The Verge reported that instead of using something like mmWave for presence sensing, an image sensor with embedded AI that processes everything on-device, such as Sony IMX500 sensors, could work without passing images that would need to be stored and secured. Apple Home currently has a Detect Activity setting for HomeKit Secure Video cameras that stops video streaming and recording but continues tracking motion, similar to what Gurman described.
Gurman added that the smart home camera will have facial recognition for things like detecting when someone enters a room, but users will not get anything except text descriptions. “There’s nothing you can do with it. There’s no video recording,” he said.
The report also says Apple is building home security products, both first-party and third-party. Apple is rumored to launch a smart home hub next month, and the security camera could come with it, according to the report.
