Apple Reportedly to Launch Smart Display, HomePod mini 2 and Faster Apple TV 4K on Oct. 13

Apple may launch a smart display, HomePod mini 2 and faster Apple TV 4K on Oct. 13, Android Authority says, citing Bloomberg.

The report says the smart display, code-named J490 and J491, is inspired by the iMac G4. It is said to have a six-inch square screen with dynamic facial and voice user recognition. Its operating system reportedly combines elements of iPadOS, watchOS and the StandBy mode from iOS. The other devices in the purported launch are an upgraded HomePod mini 2 and a faster Apple TV 4K.

For years, Google and Amazon have dominated the smart home space while Apple largely sat on the sidelines, according to Android Authority. Apple has offered the HomePod and HomePod mini, but without a dedicated smart display it lagged behind competing smart home ecosystems. Google has released the Nest Hub, Nest Hub Max and a dockable Pixel Tablet.

Android Authority said Google and Amazon have recently drawn complaints over their AI integrations. It added that the new Apple hardware could capitalize on frustration with Google Home automation bugs and compromises on the Pixel Tablet. The article described the smart home market as open to disruption.
