Apple's AI Camera Features Arrive on HomeKit Secure Video, but Cost More Than Ring and Nest
Apple Intelligence for Home adds AI-generated text descriptions and other features to HomeKit Secure Video. The Verge's test against Ring and Nest found the alerts more useful, but Apple's subscription pricing runs up to three times higher.
The Verge's test focused on video doorbells after iOS 27 officially arrived on September 14. It used a Ring Wired Doorbell Pro ($249.99), Google Nest Doorbell 2K ($199.99), and Aqara Doorbell Camera G400 ($99) for Apple HomeKit Secure Video. It evaluated how quickly each service sent AI-powered notifications, how accurate and useful the descriptions were, and how reliably each captured and notified about activity. It also tested other AI features, including Apple's ability to search and stitch together activity across multiple cameras, Ring's Unusual Events, and Google's ability to trigger automations based on what a camera sees.
The article described the author's earlier experience when a security camera sent repeated motion-detected alerts while he was at a beachside Easter egg hunt. He dismissed them, but later found his four pet chickens dead, killed by his border terrier. The Verge wrote that a notification saying a small dog was chasing a chicken could have prompted him to return home sooner and perhaps saved the chickens.
Most major security camera companies now offer AI text descriptions, which combine traditional motion triggers with Vision Language Models, including Ring, Google Nest, Blink, Wyze, and Arlo, according to The Verge. Apple's version can send messages such as a dog sitting on the floor, a cat playing in the room, or someone delivering a package. It also enables natural-language video search, surfaces noteworthy events, stitches relevant clips together, and adds a Reduce Notifications feature that combines related alerts.
To use Apple Intelligence for Home, The Verge reported, customers need an iCloud Plus plan, a HomeKit Secure Video-compatible camera, an Apple Home Hub running HomePod/tvOS 27, and an AI-capable iPhone running iOS 27. The 2TB iCloud Plus plan costs $9.99 a month and supports Apple Intelligence on one camera; the 6TB plan costs $29.99 a month for two cameras; and the 12TB plan costs $59.99 a month for up to five cameras. No tier supports more than five cameras. Standard HomeKit Secure Video recording also requires an iCloud Plus plan, starting at $0.99 for one camera on the 50GB plan, $2.99 for five on the 200GB plan, and $9.99 for unlimited on the 2TB plan. All tiers that include Apple Intelligence support basic HKSV features on unlimited cameras.
Apple Intelligence is on by default for Reduce Notifications and off by default for Summarize Videos. Users can adjust it by going to Settings in the Home app, scrolling down to Apple Intelligence, toggling on Summarize Video, and selecting participating cameras.
The Verge concluded that the AI features on all three platforms are a significant improvement over basic smart alerts. They make it easier to understand what is happening at a glance and decide whether to react, and they make security cameras feel more useful and less annoying. The article argued that the real value of AI in cameras is not merely describing what they see, but using that knowledge to determine what users actually need to know and eventually what their home should do about it.
