Apple's Image Playground Adds Natural-Language Styles and Touch Editing in iOS 27

Apple's Image Playground app, launched in December 2024, has added natural-language style prompts, touch editing, and Contact Poster and wallpaper creation in iOS 27, Engadget reports.

Image Playground uses Apple Intelligence to generate images on a device. Users can save or share the images or turn them into Genmoji, Apple's personalized emoji. The app is integrated into Apple apps including Messages, Keynote and Freeform, so users do not have to open a separate app to create an image.

To use it, users need an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, or an iPhone 16 or later with Apple Intelligence enabled. It also runs on iPads with an M1 chip or later or the iPad Mini (A17 Pro), and on Macs with at least an M1 chip.

The iOS 27 version adds an Any Style option that accepts natural-language descriptions of a visual approach, beyond earlier choices such as illustration. It also lets users modify existing images with touch and natural language; a user can select a cabin door with a finger and ask for it to be red, or move the selection. The update adds Contact Poster and Lock Screen wallpaper creation.

When users open the app, they can start from a prompt box or choose styles such as animation and sketch. Selecting Genmoji saves the creation with other stickers for use as an emoji.

Near the prompt box, users can tap a person icon and choose a face from their photos as a reference, then prompt the app to depict that person as, for example, an astronaut. A button next to the person icon lets users base an image on a photo they have taken. Below the image, they can enter more prompts or use touch to adjust it. When satisfied, they can tap Share.
