Apple's iOS 27 Adds a Slider for Tuning the Liquid Glass Look on iPhone

iOS 27, now available to the public, gives iPhone users a slider in Settings to make Apple's Liquid Glass interface more readable or more opaque, plus an Accessibility toggle that reduces transparency almost entirely.

The control sits in the Settings app. Users open Settings, find the Appearance section and select the Liquid Glass menu, where a slider has replaced the earlier on-or-off toggles. Dragging the slider to the left makes the interface look more like glass, while dragging it to the right produces the more opaque appearance seen in earlier versions of iOS. Leaving it in the center mixes the two. A preview on the same screen shows the result immediately, so users do not have to move between apps to judge the change.

The intensity of the glass effect on the Lock Screen is still adjusted separately from the slider in Settings, according to Engadget.

Liquid Glass has divided users since it launched. Some liked the glossy look, while others said it reduced readability. Apple responded in iOS 26.1 with a feature called Tinted Mode, which lowers the opacity of Liquid Glass and raises its contrast, but the complaints continued.

Because the slider is part of iOS 27, adjusting Liquid Glass this way requires updating the phone. Apple has made iOS 27 compatible with iPhone 11 models and later, so older devices are not necessarily limited to an older version of the interface.

Users who dislike the effect altogether can suppress most of it through the Accessibility settings. Under Display & Text Size, the Reduce Transparency toggle turns off the glassy look far more aggressively than the slider does.

iOS 27 has been available to developers and beta testers for some time, and Engadget reports that the public release arrived in September. Users willing to install the beta can sign up for the Apple Beta Program to try Liquid Glass adjustments and other iOS features ahead of future updates, though beta software may contain bugs.
