Apple's iOS 27 Clean Up tool now removes photo objects with greater precision

To use the upgraded Clean Up, an iPhone must be running iOS 27 and have Apple Intelligence enabled. This requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later; older iPhones cannot access the feature.

To remove objects, open a photo in the Photos app, tap Edit, then select Tools and choose Clean Up. A new Auto button at the top lets users switch between processing types. The Fast option uses a smaller, quicker AI model, suitable for simple edits like removing a trash can from a landscape or hiding street light wiring. For more complex edits, such as removing a crowd of photobombers from a selfie, the High Quality option uses advanced AI models that better understand image context, though it takes longer and consumes more battery.

Clean Up sometimes attempts to automatically recognize unwanted objects, but manual selection by circling the area is often more accurate.

iOS 27 also introduces two additional photo-editing tools in Photos. Extend uses AI to expand the canvas around a photo, letting users pinch to zoom out and generate more of the surrounding area, which can fix overly tight compositions. Reframe changes the perspective and angle of a photo, allowing users to alter the viewpoint after capture, for example to correct a look away from the camera. Results vary, as some images look natural while others may show AI-generated artifacts or hallucinated objects, so users should manage expectations.
