Apple's iOS 27 to bring expressive Siri voice, but only for newest devices

According to Engadget, Apple's iOS 27 will add expressive Siri voices, but full customization is limited to the latest devices. The report also details how users can change Siri's voice now.

For users on current versions of iOS and iPadOS, changing Siri's voice does not require waiting for the update. As reported by Engadget, users can go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Voice, select an option, listen to the playback, and decide if it suits them. The new accent or voice may need a moment to download, and a stable WiFi or cellular connection is recommended until the process completes.

Users can also adjust how Siri responds by navigating to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk & Type to Siri or Siri Responses, depending on the software version. There they can choose whether Siri speaks aloud, responds quietly, or shows text on screen only. Those who have installed the iOS 27 beta will find additional Siri-related options.

Engadget explains that Siri Expressive Voice is Apple's upcoming term for a more natural-sounding Siri in iOS 27. In the current beta, tapping Settings > Siri > Voice opens a new all-black screen with a radiating white orb. Selecting a voice presents a drop-down menu, and as of this writing, only American and British options show Pace and Expressivity sliders. Moving the slider to the right increases emotional emphasis and inflection, while moving left makes the voice more robotic and neutral.

Even without iOS 27, users can adjust Siri's speed and response timing. According to the report, Settings > Accessibility > Siri contains a Speaking Rate slider and several behavior controls, including Siri Pause Time, Spoken Responses, Listen for Atypical Speech, Require "Siri" for interruptions, and Always Show Request. These features help users customize Siri's pace and interaction style.

The report notes that iPhones as old as the SE second generation and iPhone 11 will receive iOS 27, but the degree of Apple Intelligence features will vary. Only the latest iPhones will get the full feature set, including the customizable expressive voice.
