Apple's iPhone Duo Puts Foldable Interaction First as Doubao Input Method Expands Across Five Platforms
Apple's foldable iPhone Duo has drawn attention for its interaction design, while ByteDance's Doubao input method updated to cover five platforms with cross-device sync, voice recognition and large-model text organization.
According to sspai, Apple's official design guidelines went online after the iPhone Duo launch, and six TechTalk videos were published on the company's developer website. New CEO Ternus said in interviews that Apple will not release immature products. The report said the interaction design behind the iPhone Duo may be the current best practice for foldable devices.
The report traced part of the problem to Microsoft's Surface Duo. Fluent Design offered a complex set of usage forms and interaction logic, but slow hardware and Android's fragmented ecosystem made the experience difficult. Surface Duo ended after two generations, yet it paved an early path for flexible foldable devices. Foldable interaction has since relied on ordinary smartphone logic, some tablet-style layouts for the inner screen and simple split-screen functions, without a standardized approach.
Apple's approach can be traced to its 1987 Human Interface Guidelines, whose first chapter, Philosophy, stated that people are not trying to use computers but to get their jobs done. At WWDC 2018, designer Chan Karunamuni said in Designing Fluid Interfaces that people do not wait to form a complete command before acting; they can pause, change direction and adjust based on feedback. The report connected this to iPhone X gestures, the Dynamic Island in 2023 and Liquid Glass in 2025. From these sessions, sspai identified principles such as context first, process control and spatial continuity.
According to ifanr, the Doubao input method update fills out HarmonyOS NEXT and Windows versions, giving it coverage across five platforms. Voice recognition, large-model typing, intelligent text organization and Super Transfer now cover multiple platforms. The update also lets accounts, lexicons and content follow users, turning the input method from an isolated tool on each device into a cross-device personal expression system.
When a user logs into the same Doubao account, personal lexicons on phone and computer align in real time. Names, terms, project codes, English abbreviations and common phrases corrected on one device appear in candidates on another. Super Transfer uses the input method as a cross-device clipboard: text and images copied on a phone can be pasted on a computer, and the reverse, without opening relay apps or uploading files. On iOS, after the first microphone authorization, voice input can be called through the default mode without jumping to the Doubao app. Mac users can long-press Fn to start voice input, while mobile users can hold the spacebar.
The report tested long passages, Cantonese and Cantonese-English mixed dialogue. Doubao input method followed long input, added punctuation based on pauses, and retained most Cantonese expressions and English words, though frequent language switching still required manual corrections. It also supports whisper and quiet voice recognition for office settings and offline voice when networks are unstable. Offline models must be downloaded in advance.
For voice input over 20 characters, the system first processes punctuation, paragraphs, repeated expressions and filler words, then a large model adjusts word order and reorganizes content when necessary. Both stages can be reviewed, and the original text can be restored with one tap. In a test, a rambling shopping request was turned into a checklist grouped into meat, vegetables, condiments and other goods, with quantities, cooking uses, selection notes and a 200-yuan budget. The same function can turn spoken meeting notes into to-dos or a day's account into a diary draft.
The large model also strengthens candidate suggestions. Typing 2200+167+15= returns a calculation result in the candidate bar; entering the first half of a classical poem suggests the second half; time and date descriptions surface the current timestamp. Gestures include holding the delete key and swiping up to delete text or clear candidates, down to undo, and left to clear pinyin or English input. The input method supports full pinyin, double pinyin and Wubi, and lets users adjust shortcuts, candidate font size and toolbar modules. ifanr said the client remains clean, with no pop-up promotions and controlled background resource use.
