Apple's M6 chip signals big performance and efficiency gains for iPhone 18 Pro's A20 Pro

Apple introduced the M6 chip in new Mac mini and Mac Studio, pointing to major performance and efficiency improvements for the upcoming A20 Pro in the iPhone 18 Pro via 2-nanometer technology.

The Mac mini and Mac Studio are available for pre-order starting today, 9to5Mac reported. The M6 is built using a cutting-edge 2-nanometer process, packing greater transistor density into a smaller die for "a major leap in performance and power efficiency," Apple said in a Newsroom announcement quoted by 9to5Mac.

The M6 features a new 12-core CPU with two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores, delivering the world's fastest single-threaded performance and up to 1.2 times faster multithreaded performance than the M5. It also introduces a dual 16-core Neural Engine, providing up to twice the peak compute of previous generations for faster on-device AI workflows.

Because the M6 and the A20 Pro belong to the same chip family, the upgrades announced for the M6 are expected to be reflected in the A20 Pro. Most notably, the A20 Pro is expected to use the same 2-nanometer process, which Apple highlighted as enabling major performance and power-efficiency improvements.

The exact year-over-year specifications for the A20 Pro remain unclear, including whether it will match the M6's core count or neural engine configuration. But when the iPhone 18 Pro is unveiled in a few weeks, performance and efficiency are expected to be key upgrades, according to 9to5Mac.
