Apple's Mac and iPad roadmap revealed by Omdia: OLED upgrades through 2029

A new Omdia report details Apple's display roadmap for MacBooks and iPads, featuring OLED panels on MacBook Pro/Ultra this fall and more models through 2029.

Late 2026 will bring 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch OLED displays for MacBook Pro/Ultra models, along with an 8.4-inch OLED iPad mini at 60Hz. Early 2027 sees MacBook Air models with 13.6-inch and 15.4-inch LCD displays, while iPad Air gets 11-inch and 13-inch OLED displays at 60Hz. Mid 2027 will introduce 11-inch and 13-inch OLED iPad Pro displays with added COE technology. Late 2027 adds LTPO technology to the MacBook Pro/Ultra OLED displays. Early 2028 updates the iPad Air with 11-inch and 13-inch OLED displays at 60Hz. For 2029, Omdia lists a 13.6-inch OLED MacBook with LTPO and COE, and an 8.4-inch OLED iPad mini at 60Hz.

Several details stand out in the report. After the OLED MacBook Pro/Ultra launches this fall, mini-LED MacBook Pro models will remain available until at least 2028, which could support the idea of 'Ultra' branding for the OLED version. The 13.6-inch 2029 MacBook is split out as a new model in Omdia's timeline, but based on prior rumors, this could simply be the OLED MacBook Air previously reported by Bloomberg and Ming-Chi Kuo. The MacBook Neo is conspicuously absent from the roadmap, likely because as a budget product it is not expected to get display upgrades for a while; this also explains why no base model iPads are mentioned.

Omdia also predicts that the OLED MacBook Pro/MacBook Ultra will have an M5 Ultra chip option, though that claim appears more like speculation than reporting.
