Apple's new Mac mini is available for preorder with a $100 discount for students and teachers, starting at $799.

At that price, the Mac mini is positioned as an affordable desktop option for dorm rooms, particularly for those who prefer using external monitors and peripherals over a laptop. With the new M6 or M5 Pro chipset, the device is expected to handle studying, browsing, and more demanding tasks such as design work, music production, or video editing. Apple has claimed the new chipset delivers up to 40% faster CPU performance and up to four times faster AI performance, though these figures have not yet been independently verified.

The 2026 Mac mini is essentially a refresh of the existing model with the same outward design but significant internal upgrades. It is the first Mac to feature the new M6 chipset, which is built on a 2nm process. Buyers can choose between the M6 and the M5 Pro, the latter also used in the current MacBook Pro. All models include the new N1 chip supporting Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and come with a 2.5GB Ethernet port as standard, with an upgrade option to 10GB.

Preorders are open now, with a release date scheduled for September 22. The education discount is available through Apple's Education Store in the US and, in the UK, through a Unidays discount.
