Apple says iPhone 18 Pro Reference Image is more secure than Android C2PA systems
Apple launched Reference Image for iPhone 18 Pro, an opt-in sensor-level photo verification mode it calls more secure than C2PA.
The report says the key difference is when the cryptographic signature is attached to an image. Reference Image signs a picture at the sensor level, the moment the sensor captures it and before any image processing. C2PA-based systems, by contrast, sign images after they have been processed.
Google introduced verified photography with the Pixel 10 series using the C2PA standard, and later brought the feature to the Pixel 11 range. Apple began offering support for verified photography only with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, according to the report, an entire generation after the Pixel 10 series.
Apple now claims that its “Reference Image” is much better than the C2PA standard used by companies such as Google and Samsung. In a new blog post, Apple shared extensive insights into how Reference Image works and why it considers the system better than anything else available to the general public, according to Android Authority.
Reference Image is an opt-in feature. It works on the primary camera of the iPhone 18 Pro series and adds a cryptographic signature to the photo the moment the sensor captures it, before any image processing takes place.
The feature is limited to the main sensor. It cannot add verification signatures to photos taken by the ultrawide or telephoto cameras, the report says.
Apple’s approach differs by moving the signature earlier in the capture process, while C2PA-based implementations sign after processing. Apple’s claims center on security and the point at which verification data is attached to an image.
Android Authority reported that Apple’s support for verified photography arrived a generation after Google introduced the feature on the Pixel 10 series. Apple’s implementation is available on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but not across all cameras on those devices.
