Apple Says iPhone Duo's Folding Display Has a Replaceable Cover Layer to Limit Crease

Apple's Kate Bergeron says the iPhone Duo's folding screen carries a replaceable cover layer that can be peeled off and renewed, a design meant to keep creases from becoming more visible over time. AppleCare lists the replacement at $19.

Kate Bergeron, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, described the layer in an interview with @angietutorials published on TikTok. "The matte display coating does a really nice job of, I'll say minimizing the crease," Bergeron said. "But there's a cover layer on top, and we've done a significant amount of engineering work to help that wear in as long of a manner as we can, and to make sure that you get the most out of that layer's performance. It's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one."

The cover layer also appears in Apple's list of estimated AppleCare service costs for the iPhone Duo. Quinn Nelson spotted that a cover layer replacement is priced at $19 with AppleCare; the cost without coverage is not currently known, 9to5Mac reported.

The iPhone Duo was introduced last month. After the launch, Apple executives gave interviews explaining that the company had deliberately worked to maximize durability and to minimize the crease issues that affect other foldable phones. The replaceable layer is part of that effort, which 9to5Mac characterized as a way to preserve a day-one look on the folding screen over years of use.

9to5Mac framed the feature as an answer to buyers who worry about spending more than $2,000 on an iPhone Duo only to see the display crease grow more prominent over time. In its report, the outlet asked readers whether the crease on the iPhone Duo concerns them.
