Apple Says Software Update to Fix iPhone 18 Pro Rebooting Bug Coming Next Week

Apple will release a software update early next week to fix an iPhone 18 Pro rebooting bug after failed Face ID attempts

The problem was first reported on Monday by 9to5Mac, which said the behavior appeared to be a software glitch rather than an inherent hardware fault. The confirmation from Apple followed user reports and social media posts indicating the bug was reasonably widespread, though it did not appear to affect all users.

9to5Mac said it reproduced the issue on an iPhone 18 Pro by obscuring its face with a hand while attempting a Face ID authentication to access the Passwords app. The phone stopped responding to touch input and performed a hard reboot after a few seconds. A panic log could then be found in the iPhone Analytics section of the Settings app.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have a redesigned Face ID sensor system. The infrared camera has moved behind the under-screen area near where the clock is rendered in the status bar, resulting in a visible Dynamic Island that is 25 percent smaller.

Some customers had already tried to resolve the rebooting problem by swapping their phone for a new device at Apple, thinking it was a hardware fault, 9to5Mac reported earlier in the week. With a software fix now confirmed to be on the way, that step is not necessary.

Separately, Apple released watchOS 27.0.1 to fix a random restart issue with Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.
