Apple Sets Oct. 13 'Welcome Home' Event for Smart Home Products
Apple's Oct. 13 'Welcome home' event is expected to feature a HomePad smart display, Apple TV 4K, and HomePod mini 2.
9to5Mac reported that the event has two parts: an in-person experience for members of the press in New York City and an online video presentation, as Mark Gurman has called it. Press releases and one or more videos are expected around 9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT on October 13, though Apple has not confirmed that timing, so the actual launch may vary. At minimum, Apple has said it will announce something on October 13.
According to 9to5Mac, the headlining product is expected to be Apple's long-rumored smart display, which the site has been calling the HomePad. 9to5Mac reported that Apple believes the device can serve as a central hub for the home, powered by Siri AI and Apple Intelligence. Bloomberg reported that the device will have a 6-inch square display atop a half-dome base, with a metal arm holding it up. It is expected to come in two versions, one that can be mounted on a wall and one that can sit on a countertop. Reports have likened the design to Apple's iMac G4.
The HomePad's flagship features are expected to include recognition of multiple people in a household. Mark Gurman reported that it can recognize who is talking to it or approaching it and dynamically adjust what is shown on the screen. On the software side, 9to5Mac reported that the HomePad mixes elements of the Apple Watch, Apple TV, and iPad, including iPad-like app designs and Apple Watch-style icons. It will also borrow from the iPhone for widgets and StandBy mode.
Apple is also expected to announce a new Apple TV 4K next week, the first update to the set-top box since November 2022, according to 9to5Mac. The new Apple TV is expected to look the same as its predecessor but will reportedly include the A19 or A19 Pro chip. That upgrade would allow Apple to bring Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features to the Apple TV for the first time.
9to5Mac reported that Apple is also working on new software features for the Apple TV and HomePod. For example, code references point to a feature that would let users arrange four full-sized HomePods in a surround sound system when paired with Apple TV.
The HomePod mini is expected to get its first proper upgrade next week. The main change is a new chip that is much faster than the current model's S5 processor, bringing support for Siri AI. The S5 chip in the current HomePod mini is the same chip Apple debuted with the Apple Watch Series 5. 9to5Mac reported that the new HomePod mini 2 will come in new colors: pink, white, green, blue, and black.
Apple is also working with LG on new 'second-party' accessories for HomeKit, according to 9to5Mac. The products are expected to include a smart lock, thermostat, doorbell, and multiple cameras. Bloomberg reported that Apple will not release these accessories for at least a few more months, but they could still be shown as part of Apple's broader home strategy next week. 9to5Mac also referenced leaked images and reports about the LG-made HomeKit products and an exclusive iPhone feature.
